The National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued a new report to help organizations mitigate supply chain risks.

The issuance of NIST Interagency Report 7622, Notional Supply Chain Risk Management Practices for Federal Information Systems, comes at a time when a congressional panel cautioned against using equipment manufactured by Chinese telecom equipment makers Huawei and ZTE because their components might have been altered to allow the Chinese government to spy on Western governments and businesses.

GreenSupplyChainAwardOur world is changing rapidly; the forces of nature are wreaking havoc, shifting environmental and turbulent weather patterns and ongoing calamitous and extreme conditions, which are all pointing towards “Sustainability” and “Embracing Green” as the only long-term solutions to help regulate the damage before it has severe consequences.

Today, companies and citizens, alike, are not only moving towards sustainable and eco-friendly products and solutions, but also ensuring and insisting for the “greening” of the entire end-to-end manufacturing, production, and logistics processes that are key to creating the end product.

Apple SupplyChainAfter rumors of an iPhone 5 shortage due to Apple cutting ties with supplier Samsung, the tech giant may now have another concern about its production capabilities - this time with the just-announced iPad Mini.

Apple recently announced its intentions to release a smaller version of its hit iPad, which will ship out to consumers on November 2. Demand is expected to be high, as loyal Apple customers typically order their products before they hit store shelves and this new, cheaper alternative to the iPad has been hotly anticipated for months already.

FordProdLine2A lot of freight gets generated by the automotive industry in the U.S., in terms of supporting vehicle assembly plants as well as delivering the finished products to dealerships across the country just to name two of them.

So when automotive OEMs and their suppliers list “transportation legislation” and “supply chain concerns” as two of their biggest worries heading into 2013, it gives trucking companies an opportunity to sit at a table they typically don’t get invited to.

What do three leading chemical, automobile, and software companies have in common? All three – Honda, BASF and SAP– are looking to curb risks and take advantage of opportunities across their global supply chains. They’re doing so by measuring their greenhouse gas emissions not just in their operations but up and down their value chains.

Many other multinationals are heading in the same direction. The Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) annual survey of the Global 500, released last month, reveals that seven in ten respondents measured some value chain emissions in 2011, up from about half in 2010. (Note this figure is based on WRI’s analysis of the 405 companies that submitted data to the CDP 2012 survey data.)

kraftAt the CSCMP Annual Conference a couple of weeks ago, I attended the best supply chain presentation I’ve been to in years. It was given by Ron Volpe, Customer VP – Supply Chain at Kraft Foods, and Jon Golovin, CEO of Retail Solutions Inc. Kraft is using solutions from Retail Solutions to better leverage its downstream data. The company has a truly audacious goal for inventory reductions based on using this data.

I’d like to share some comments made by Jon about the maturation of shelf-level collaboration, with some supporting examples based on Kraft Foods’ experiences.

Padmini-5-275x295Wednesday may be a big day for tech news. Rumors have been flying around that Apple will be sending out invitations on Oct. 10 to a product announcement event. If it is true, we are about to discover the truth behind the iPad mini rumors. We can all assume that the device exists. However, when it will drop is the big question.

Many industry analysts have speculated the smaller Apple tablet will make it to store shelves in time for the holiday season. Some think the iPad maker will stick with tradition and wait until spring to launch the new product. The Wall Street Journal seems to think Apple will release the iPad mini this fall and has information that suppliers have more than 10 million units on order right now.

iPhone teardown-380x285

Despite Pricier Display, Apple's Component Expenses Rise Just $9 Above 4S.

Some important components used to build Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5 cost a little more than those of the phone's predecessor, owing to an improved display and a more-advanced main processor chip.

Yet Apple was able to take advantage of lower costs on other components and kept its overall component expenses just slightly higher.

That was the conclusion of an analysis conducted by the research firm IHS on Friday.
